Tramshed – House Farm Chicken

Hall of Slime

Nando’s ain’t the only place you can get a full chicken at. And it’s certainly not the coolest. And it certainly doesn’t have a cow in formaldehyde floating above the dining hall.

At Tramshed, one of HIX’s several restaurants across the capital, you can get your fix of inordinate amounts of chicken, with a presentation that’s as savoury as it is filthy. Kind of what we’re all about here anyways.

Once this perfectly cooked bird arrives to your table, complete with succulent stuffing and a hearthy dose of chips, you’ll never go back to ordering ¼ or ½ chicken ever again. Full chicken is the way to go, regardless of how many people you’re sharing with.

Slimy? Straight from the oven to your table, this thing is shinyyyyyy

Satisfying? Tastes as good as roasted chicken can possibly taste

Smokestak – Beef Brisket

Hall of Slime

Never has so little caused as big an impact.

Brisket is, by definition, a gift from the gods, no matter where you have it. But when I ordered my beef brisket from Smokestak at a non-irrelevant £11.5, I was certainly expecting something bigger or, dare I say it, meatier.

But as wise men know, size isn’t everything. Taste is. And boy does this meat taste good. Tender as can be, and full of delicious, meaty flavour, the beef brisket at Smokestak is smart to be such a small plate: it cannot realistically be shared. A good thing, since you will NOT want to share it.

Coupled with some ‘mustard bbq’ sauce (Is it mustard? Is it BBQ sauce? Who cares!), and served in an ever-so-hipsterish tray, the taste will remain in your tastebuds for long. Or at least for the few seconds before you realise you desperately need to order another round.

Slimy? A slice of juicy juicy meat, with juicy juicy sauce. Slime galore.

Satisfying? Why art thou so small, you beautiful brisket thing?!?

Seeing double rocks!

Bleecker St. – Double Cheeseburger

Burgertown, Uncategorized

Always go for twice as much. It’s an old Chinese proverb (not really). If you ever have the option to go bigger, you should. So when I’m faced with the impossibly obvious decision of whether I’m having a cheeseburger or a Double Cheeseburger, you can bet your bum that I’ll be seeing double when the food comes.

Bleecker St. have been running food carts and stalls in many places, but it had somehow eluded my palate until last weekend. While wrestling the hordes of confused tourists at Old Spitalfields Market (“let’s go back to Covent Garden”), burger time came along. To be honest, it always is burger time. But this time it was serious. So serious, in fact, that I went big. Double big.

Seeing double rocks!

Packing two massive, medium rare patties, plus burger sauce and some veggies, this was one flavourful and seriously dirty hamburger. Double the flavour, double the dirty. Double EVERYTHING.

So what happens now? I’ve only been once and loved it, so not to be charged with hypocrisy, I’ll have to follow the “path of the double” and come back for more…

Slimy? Double the slimy. DOUBLE.

Satisfying? Double the satisfying as well. DOUBLE.

Yum Bun – Pork and Shrimp Steamed Buns

Uncategorized

It’s only natural that I would go from tacos to what are, under my inexperienced eyes, Japanese tacos. Using steam buns as a base, the japs have created this fascinating new (well, new for me anyways) way of consuming various quirky ingredients.

And thus, my Dinerama adventure continued, because I couldn’t be satisfied with only one meal, so I had to give the buns from Yum Bun a go. I ordered both a pork and a shrimp bun, both coming with various sauces, veggies, spices, etc. Both a bundle of joy (pun absolutely intended).

So much bun! Yum Bun - Pork and Shrimp Steamed Buns

So much bun!

These buns are the softest kind of bread I’ve tried, and they blend perfectly with whatever they come with (and I do emphasize the whatever). The pork one, with its hoisin sauce, was succulent, and the shrimp one was a spicy delicacy.

At Slimy yet Satisfying, we appreciate all meals that can be eaten with bare hands. So Yum Bun passes the test, and I’ll be coming back for more yummy bunnies. On second thought, maybe I’ll start my own bun business called Yummy Bunnies.

Slimy? These buns are a bit sticky. Which is good, it keeps the ingredients in place.

Satisfying? Yummy bunny.

Breddos Tacos – Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Baja Fish Tacos

Uncategorized

Mexican food is confusing. It’s hard to know the difference between tacos, fajitas, burritos, enchiladas. Aren’t they all the same? Does it really matter?

We know they all have some sort of tortilla. They are usually spicy. Sometimes really spicy. But honestly, when I order tacos, I’m seriously never quite sure what I’m going to get. Like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates. Only with tacos, not chocolates.

So when I approached Breddos Tacos at Dinerama (admittedly with a few drinks in), I had no idea what to expect. But I ordered anyways, knowing that the only bad thing that could happen when eating mexican food would happen the next day anyways. And so, I received both a Buttermilk Fried Chicken Taco and a Baja Fish one.

Left or right? Why not BOTH. Breddos Tacos - Buttermilk Fried Chicken and Baja Fish Tacos

Left or right? Why not BOTH

As tiny as they were, these things were great. Expertly cooked fish and chicken, coupled with some mystery sauces (mystery as in there’s no way I could remember the ingredients), both tacos were the quick food jolt I required at that moment in time. Plus, you can finish each in two bites, making you feel like a devouring champion.

Is this what you get in Mexico when you order tacos? Absolutely not. But that’s the point. Leave it to London to take tacos, add weird and certainly non mexican ingredients, and make something even better. Or at least something delicious.

Slimy? They are tacos. Things will get messy wether you want it or not.

Satisfying? Tiny but delicious! A little mexican treat. Arriba arriba!
